If you've ever craved a mystery that reads like a treasure map laced with danger, heart, and a dash of ancient intrigue, this book might just be your next page-turner.

Set in the quiet town of Upland, California, the story starts with sisters Chloe and Lily stumbling upon a strange artifact, the Obsidian Eye and quickly escalates into something much bigger than either of them could have imagined. What begins as a curious find turns into a full-on race involving secret societies, historical puzzles, and more than a few shadowy surprises.

What really holds the story together is the bond between the two sisters. Chloe, the steady, brave one, and Lily, the quick-thinking dreamer, make for a compelling duo. You don’t just root for them because the plot is exciting you root for them because they feel real. Their arguments, their loyalty, their quiet moments, they all ring true. If you've ever had a sibling (or even just a really close friend), their relationship will feel familiar in the best way.

The pacing is fast without feeling rushed. Each chapter drops a new clue or twist, and it’s genuinely fun to follow the sisters as they decode riddles, sneak into secret places, and lean on help from an eclectic group of side characters including a martial artist and a hacker. Despite all the danger, there's humor, warmth, and even some thoughtful moments about trust, legacy, and doing the right thing when things get tough.

Even though it's geared toward teens, this book doesn’t talk down to its audience. The writing is clean and engaging, and it’s easy to get lost in the story, no matter your age. Think Nancy Drew meets National Treasure, but with more sisterly banter and better pacing.

In short, this is just fun, mysterious enough to keep you guessing, heartfelt enough to make you care. It’s the kind of book you read in a weekend and then recommend to your cousin, your niece, or your book club. I’ll definitely be tagging along for the next adventure in the series.

The Obsidian Eye by Cathy Warshaw is an engaging blend of mystery, historical intrigue, and a touch of the supernatural.

I didn’t expect to read this in one sitting, but The Obsidian Eye pulled me in like a magnet. From the moment Chloe and Lily stumbled across the strange artifact, it felt like opening a secret compartment in an otherwise normal day. There’s no slow climb—it’s like you’ve already been dropped into the puzzle and the clock is ticking.

What makes this book shine is the sibling bond. Chloe’s boldness and Lily’s calm intellect balance each other perfectly. It felt less like reading characters and more like watching real sisters bounce off each other under pressure, and it kept me emotionally invested.

There’s a strong mystery at the center of the story, and the clues unfold in a way that keeps you guessing—but never confused. Warshaw doesn’t hand anything to you, which makes solving things alongside the girls really satisfying.

I was also impressed by how well the secondary characters were used. No one felt like set dressing; each person added tension or insight, helping to raise the stakes without overcomplicating the plot.

Short but tightly written, The Obsidian Eye is a thrilling start to what feels like a very promising series. I’m already hoping for the sequel.

This is a first in a series written by a fellow resident in my city. Her first ever book at that. Cathy did send me a digital copy to read and provide feedback.

Now let me begin by saying, this is not my typical genre of choice. I lean towards psychological thrillers, popcorn thrillers, and horror. Sooo with that said; I did struggle to finish this read. Not that it’s not a good book, it is just not my usual reading choice.

I rated four stars because it is a very well written, very descriptive book. Keeps you entertained and being this is set in my own city, makes me wonder what actual secrets lay underground.

I am being nit-picky with how the characters had cell service underground and on Mt Baldy, we all know there’s no cell service in the mountain lol but again that’s being nitpicky.

I feel like I’d watch this as a movie for sure.

Great book for teens who love a good mystery adventure book.

Cathy Warshaw returns with a powerful follow-up in The Land of Promise, The Seven Seals, the second book in her Secret Societies and the Sisterhood Sleuths series. This installment expands the scope of the story, transporting readers from the quiet backdrop of California to the historical and symbolic landscape of Israel—where ancient legends, modern-day threats, and a dangerous conspiracy collide.

Chloe and Lily, the sister duo introduced in The Obsidian Eye, are no longer simply amateur sleuths—they are now emerging leaders in a dangerous quest that goes beyond personal discovery. A new mystery arises involving the Seven Seals—objects tied to a forgotten prophecy that may hold tremendous power. To unravel the truth, the sisters and their trusted companions must journey through Israel’s most iconic and spiritually charged locations, piecing together clues hidden in its sacred geography and ancient ruins.

Warshaw’s gift lies in crafting stories that are as intellectually engaging as they are thrilling. The narrative takes readers through well-researched historical settings, including fortress strongholds, subterranean passageways, and hidden desert sites. These are not just backdrops; they are integral to the mystery, rich with symbolism and cultural weight. Each location adds depth and atmosphere, and Warshaw’s descriptions are vivid enough to immerse the reader fully, while remaining fast-paced and plot-focused.

This book is also a significant step forward in terms of character development. Chloe’s instincts have sharpened, and Lily’s insight has become even more crucial to the team’s success. Alongside them, allies like Gil and Aaron take on larger roles, bringing their own strengths—tactical brilliance and unwavering loyalty, respectively—to the forefront. Their interactions add complexity and emotion to the story, reinforcing themes of unity, trust, and purpose under pressure.

The central tension revolves around more than solving a mystery—it’s about protecting a truth that powerful forces are desperate to control. The Society, a covert group with its own motives, emerges as a formidable antagonist. Their presence adds constant suspense, forcing the team to stay ahead in a game of intellect, strategy, and survival.

Warshaw seamlessly blends action, puzzle-solving, and deeper reflections on morality, faith, and power. The novel touches on timeless questions: Who decides what truths are kept hidden? What happens when ancient secrets threaten the present? These elements give the story both narrative drive and philosophical substance, elevating it beyond a conventional teen mystery.

The Land of Promise, The Seven Seals is an ambitious, intelligent, and highly engaging novel that solidifies Cathy Warshaw’s place as a rising voice in YA mystery. With sharp writing, culturally rich settings, and characters that continue to evolve, this book offers an immersive experience for teen readers who crave both thrills and meaning in their adventures.

A compelling continuation to a promising series—this story not only entertains but challenges its readers to think deeper, trust stronger, and never underestimate the power of a determined mind.

There, they meet Gil, a man who has been tracking The Society for years. He assures them that if they stand against The Society, he’s on their side. The Society seeks to reshape the world in its own image—one that excludes people like Gil, Chloe, and Lily.

The Obsidian Eye is a gripping and atmospheric read that blends mystery, mythology, and a touch of the supernatural. The story pulls you in right away with its eerie tone and vivid writing, as secrets are uncovered and tied to a strange artifact—the obsidian eye. Warshaw does a great job creating a world that feels both real and otherworldly, and the way she mixes ancient legends with a modern-day storyline keeps things fresh and unpredictable.

What really stands out is how the book balances suspense with emotion. Chloe and Lily are different but both feel real and relatable. Warshaw builds tension slowly but effectively, and the twists never feel forced. There’s a dreamlike quality to the writing at times, but it never gets too abstract or hard to follow. The Obsidian Eye is just the beginning of an exciting new YA mystery series by author Cathy Warshaw.

Without a whole lot of backstory or set up, readers are introduced to mystery-seeker detective sisters Chloe and Lily as they are quickly thrown into a twisty adventure after discovering a mysterious artifact (the titular "Obsidian Eye"). The sisters, though they bring two very different personalities to the mix, have an incredibly strong bond that serves them well as they race to collect clues and solve complex puzzles.

Stakes feel high and the action does not ease up through out this fast but satisfying read.  Though on the short side, The Obsidian Eye doesn't skimp on plot or character development; the danger feels real, the pace brisk, and even the multiple colorful side characters feel fully formed and necessary to move the story along.

Though there is a satisfying conclusion to this particular adventure, author Warshaw leaves a little bit of a thread to hold on to, enticing readers to follow her along for more adventures with Chloe and Lily in the next installment of the series.

The Hardy Boys For A Modern Audience

Sisters Chloe and Lily Hastings are yanked from solving small-time mysteries (like where a family heirloom ends up, or where the neighbourhood cat is) into the high-stakes world of Upland’s elites.

Right from the prologue, I was hooked. I loved the sleepy town vibes and adored the dynamic between the sisters. You can really tell that while they like to poke each other’s buttons, they have a bond that can’t be broken, though it will be tested! It’s a great blend of humor and suspense that will keep you reading and will definitely have you reaching for the next book.

Though the book is recommended for ages 12-18, I think the smart writing can be enjoyed by anyone. Kids will love that this book doesn’t talk down to them, while slightly older teenagers will appreciate what’s truly at stake here.

I can’t wait to follow these sisters around the world on their next adventures.

As a mystery lover myself, I was instantly pulled in by the premise of this book and enchanted by the story at each turn of the page!

The Obsidian Eye is a fun-filled mystery that follows the path of two young sisters, Chloe and Lily, as they enter the world of discovery and detection. The book follows them through their introduction to a dark mystery that lies behind the seemingly pleasant outlook of their home in beautiful Upland, California. Each step they take leads them deeper and deeper into the mystery as they try and discover the secret workings of The Society, all the while drawing the reader along with them. I think any reader would love following along the way as they discover enemies, make friends and allies, face danger, endure betrayal, and more. Every new development will leave one wanting to turn the page just to see what happens next!

If you are looking for a good mystery that you can easily follow along with, The Obsidian Eye would be a great addition to your digital or physical bookshelf!

The Obsidian Eye is a gripping and imaginative start to the Secret Societies and the Sisterhood Sleuths series by Cathy Warshaw. Centered on sisters Chloe and Lily, the story takes readers on a fast-paced adventure after the girls discover a mysterious artifact that plunges them into a world of danger, ancient secrets, and hidden societies.

The novel perfectly balances mystery, action, and emotion. Chloe and Lily are relatable, courageous, and full of heart - their bond is the emotional anchor of the story. Along the way, they team up with a diverse and talented group of allies, each bringing their own unique strengths to the quest.

Warshaw's writing is vivid and accessible, making it easy to get swept into the intrigue. With every twist and turn, the suspense builds, keeping you hooked until the final page. It's a smart, empowering, and adventurous read that celebrates teamwork, resilience, and bravery.

An Exhilarating, Fun, and Twisty YA Adventure

I am a sucker for strong female protagonists who meet their destinies head on, no matter the stakes. In The Obsidian Eye, Lily and Chloe find themselves in the center of a mystery when they discover an artifact with dangerous ties to the past, present, and future. Add in an eclectic group of characters who must help them uncover secrets that will impact more than just their small California hometown, and you have yourself a masterful page-turner that you will devour in one sitting. Go ahead. Prove me wrong.

The writing in this book is superb. Author Cathy Warshaw clearly understands the current young adult genre, using her sharp dialogue, action-packed prose, and stunning plot twists to prove she's a contender for someone's favorite author (one of mine this year, for sure). I am so in awe of how she weaves every element together and makes them work well to the very last, satisfying page. Young women, men, and the young at heart will not feel slighted in entertainment, either. There's fun and funny between the darker parts. Better than the movies, The Obsidian Eye creates a world for readers to get lost in again and again.

Clear your schedule and just hit play. Or, in this case, click and "open" the book.

I also love Warshaw's invitation in the beginning of this story to join the sister sleuths. It's such a wonderful way to promote her work and build a community of strong empowered readers. In turn, this invitation brings her fiction to life even more than her prose does on its own (which is impressive, since her prose is top league). I love an author who gets it...that stories have the ability to reach far beyond the page. Warshaw is astutely making sure her fan base feels tended to. And, we do!!!

Teenagers will LOVE it!

Cathy Warshaw's The Obsidian Eye is exactly the kind of book I love to see in the hands of young readers- fun, fast-paced, and filled with mystery, smarts, and heart. I gave this to my 14-year-old niece as a gift, and she absolutely devoured it, begging to dive into book two before she even finished the last page. That's the kind of magic Warshaw has created with this exciting first installment in the Secret Societies and The Sisterhood Sleuths series.

What I really loved is how the book celebrates curiosity, intelligence, and bravery, especially among young women. Chloe and Lily aren't superheroes; they're relatable girls with real fears, strengths, and a deep sisterly bond that anchors the story beautifully. With the help of a diverse and quirky team - a martial artist, a hacker, and a robotics genius- they prove that teamwork and heart go a long way, even against centuries-old mysteries.

Warshaw strikes a great balance between suspense and accessibility. It's complex enough to challenge young readers and keep them engaged, but never so dense that it loses them. For teens who love decoding puzzles, following clues, and solving mysteries, this is a perfect pick. And for parents or mentors who want to get the teens in their lives into reading? The Obsidian Eye is a total win.

It's no surprise this book is getting the attention it deserves. It's the kind of story that sparks a love of reading-exactly what every young reader needs. I can't wait to see where the series goes next, and neither can my niece!

The Prologue Pulls You Right In! Cathy Warshaw's "The Obsidian Eye" sets the stage for more mysteries to come with beloved characters Chloe and Lily Hastings.  When I started reading the book, I couldn't help but think of how much my daughter would enjoy such a series! I love the suspense factor throughout, too. It propels readers through each chapter with the anticipation of closure in the next. The Hastings sisters have such a great dynamic. Having several daughters, I found myself imagining my oldest two girls bantering back and forth as Chloe and Lily do. I'd say the positive relationship the sisters have is inspiring and gives younger readers the fictional influences to look up to in many ways. The sense of adventure in Lily combined with the practical and brave older sister, Chloe, made me smile. You definitely do not want to skip the prologue in this book. It sucks you right in!

"A Thrilling Treasure Hunt of Secrets and Sisterhood"

The Obsidian Eye by Cathy Warshaw is a captivating young adult mystery thriller that follows two small-town sisters, Chloe and Lily, as they stumble upon a cryptic artifact known as the Obsidian Eye. What begins as a curious discovery quickly spirals into a high-stakes adventure, pulling them into a web of secrets, danger, and historical intrigue.

The story is rich with historical depth and ethical questions about the past without ever losing its fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat momentum. Readers will be drawn in by the puzzle-like plot, the emotional layers between the sisters, and the thrilling sense of mystery that unfolds with every chapter.

While the pacing starts slowly as the world builds, it quickly gains steam, delivering a payoff that's both clever and satisfying. Warshaw blends real-world issues with thrilling fiction, making The Obsidian Eye more than just a mystery; it's a story about trust, legacy, and finding strength in unexpected places. Perfect for fans of adventure, history, and smart, courageous heroines. Five stars!
